THE (AUTUMNAL) SKIN YOU’RE IN

We’ve officially landed in the fall season — can you believe it? It feels like only yesterday we were shouting, “Happy New Year!” And now, we will soon hear those words ring out, again. But, for now, our focus is on getting used to the idea that a chill in the air is coming, and that not only means we celebrate the arrival of pumpkin spice, well, everything, but we have to remember to get out our sweaters, boots, and, of course, change up our skincare routines! Going from the summertime glow of lighter makeup and skincare products, as well as dewy moisture, to moisturizers that lock in the fleeting moisture of drier skin, and heavier products, can take some adjusting. Here are some ideas on how to make the transition a little easier (please don’t go, summer!).

1. Keeping your skin type in mind, introduce a heavier moisturizer.

Heavier doesn’t have to equal clogging. In the fall months that lead up to the winter, we are going to start noticing our skin (allover, not just in the face) getting drier. The skincare beauty routine that was second nature to us in the summer just won’t cut it now. It’s usually pretty easy to find a moisturizer for your body, but when it comes to your face, you want to make sure you’re using ingredients that won’t suffocate or clog your pores, just for the sake of heavier moisture, and you want to be sure that it doesn’t go the other extreme, giving you too much shine and grease. For 24-hour moisture, we love the Luxe Moisturizing Creme, for locking moisture in for days at a time, we’re here for the Sleepover Nighttime Moisturizer, and for rejuvenating our skin while keeping the moisture on lock, we also have to rave about the Citrus Stem Cell Intense Moisture Lock Creme.

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Hydration is a no-brainer in the summer months, when heat is high and it’s second nature to reach for your water bottle or refreshment of choice. When the days get cooler, the frequency may decrease, and while you’re probably not sweating out as much moisture (unless you’re a fitness fanatic!), there’s not as urgent a need to overdo it, when it comes to hydration. Of course, you should stay hydrated and drink the recommended amount of water, every day — it’s a great way to feed your skin from the inside. We also think it’s important to hydrate your (drier) fall skin from the outside. We’re loving the intensely hydrating medicinal mushrooms that restore balance for a radiant glow in the AYA Restorative Goddess Mask for that exact purpose!

3. Don’t exfoliate your skin as much.

Another tip for transitioning from a summer-to-fall skincare routine is reducing the amount of time you give to exfoliating your skin. In the summer months, your skin is more naturally hydrated, and exfoliating doesn’t pose a threat. In the cooler months, when you exfoliate skin that’s already a little drier, you’re liable to cause more irritation, which, in turn, causes more dryness and peeling. Keep your exfoliating to a minimum, and then use a moisturizing product to help keep the moisture you do still have, in.

Getting into a fall skincare beauty routine can seem daunting, especially after getting so used to your routine for the summer months (you kept it light!). If you want some help on how to introduce new products to your skincare routine, we covered that last week. You may go through a little trial and error, at first, but we’re confident you’ll find the best routine, and products, that are best suited for you!
