The Skincare Glossary You Didn’t Know You Needed

There are genuinely *so* many skin care products out there. From toners to moisturizers, to serums, to acids, there’s no shortage of items on the market that you can add to your skincare routine. That said, how do you know when a product is actually, like, good for you? TBH, it’s a very fair question. But we’ve got answers!

Here’s the thing: It’s important to look at the ingredient list whenever you consider adding another product to your skincare routine, because some can be seriously harmful to your precious complexion. The key is to buy formulas that you know are skin-safe, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. (For more information on what *not* to buy, check out our ‘Toxic Twenty’ list.)

That’s why Glory spoke with expert Onyeka Obioha, MD, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, for the lowdown on all the must-have ingredients for your skincare routine (and what each of them can do for your skin!). Interested in this lil’ mini skincare glossary? We don’t blame you. Keep reading.

Bakuchiol

Odds are you’ve heard of bakuchiol before, but did you know that it’s super good for your skin, too? “It has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties,” Dr. Obioha explains. And, yep, it’s a natural alternative to retinol (one of our Toxic Twenty!), in case your skin is on the sensitive side.

Niacinamide

This ingredient has been all the rage as of late. Why? “It’s a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” says Dr. Obioha, “It’s used orally and topically for acne, rosacea, and skin cancer prevention.” Noted!

Hyaluronic Acid

If your skin is dying for moisture, meet your new ingredient go-to. “It draws in water like a sponge, helping the skin appear healthy and supple,” says Dr. Obioha. Another bonus? Hyaluronic acid increases the tolerability of prescription acne products (if you’re on them!) which can be a bit drying, Dr. Obioha explains.

Product Suggestion: Dehiya Beauty Safi Mist

Peptides

If you suffer from super puffy skin (we’ve all been there), let us introduce to your new BFF: peptides. “They decrease the production of pro-inflammatory messengers, as well as help with collagen and elastin building in the skin,” Dr. Obioha says. Basically, if dull or lackluster skin needs a lil’ boost, incorporate peptide-containing products into your routine.

Product Suggestion: Sistine Sister’s Super Fruit Moisturizer

CBD

Another de-puffing (and very on-trend!) option for your skincare sitch? CBD. “More research is needed, but the anti-inflammatory properties of topical cannabinoids is promising,” says Dr. Obioha. Plus, if you need it, CBD can help you calm TF down and ease joint pain.

Melatonin

If you’re under the impression that melatonin is only for helping you fall (and stay) asleep, think again. “Melatonin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that works to fight against UV induced free radical damage and stress on the skin,” says Dr. Obioha. TLDR; Use this if you want to protect your skin from the elements as well as bring some life back to your tired complexion.

Vitamin C

You should know by now that at Glory, we’re big proponents of Vitamin C. A powerful antioxidant that protects against and repairs damage induced by free radicals and the sun, this ingredient can also brighten the complexion’s overall appearance, notes Dr. Obioha.

Sulfur

To acne sufferers everywhere, this should be your new pimple-fighting hero. “Sulfur is a well-tolerated way to reduce redness, swelling, and kill acne-causing bacteria,” says Dr. Obioha. It’s great for when you’ve got a big, pulsing, so-far-under-your-skin-it-hurts kind of zit —trust!

Tea Tree Oil

“Tea tree oil helps reduce inflammation and also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties,” Dr. Obioha explains. This makes it great for soothing a wide range of skin issues such as acne, rosacea, and psoriasis.
